Courage.

What makes a Winter Sower differ from a mere gardener?

Courage.

My neighbor came over following today's snow ostensibly to ask how the sprouts were doing. This is the same neighbor that watched, amazed and perplexed, as I potted and planted out seedlings by the score while explaining the winter sowing method just last weekend.

I was, frankly, quite worried to hear him ask about the plants since I had not yet had a chance to check on them after today's snow storm. His presence and suspiciously jovial "innocent" inquiry only served to increase my anxiety.

The flakes were half dollar size, wet and heavy ... really heavy ... and midway through the storm they turned to driving sleet that eventually yielded to a steady, pouring rain. When it was over the snow was gone, and I was so sure my seedlings were just ruined in the three hour episode.

Hah! I so wish I had my digital camera trained on my neighbor's face as we made our inspections. These little winter born scrappers came through the storm just fine. By early evening I was already potting out more seedlings from the cold frame to join their numbers.

And as for my neighbor ... maybe seeing is believing ... maybe not ... time will tell.

Courage ... heh, heh ... ya can say that again!

Thank you very much Steve,
you are our WinterSown Hero!
