Perennial Butterfly Weed is a member of the milkweed family. Butterfly Weed grows between twelve and twenty-four inches high and has clusters of bright orange flowers which attract butterflies and bees that come for its abundant nectar. It is the larval food of the Queen Butterfly. Butterfly Weed can be seen growing wild in meadows and hillsides. It prefers sandy, gravelly, poor soil and full sun. This plant can withstand drought, its woody root is large and well developed, especially in older specimens, making it hard to dig out for transplant. Increase by seed.
